You’re not a kid anymore. You’re not going to just waste away your summer watching TV, bumming around with friends or refreshing your social media websites–well at least not for the entire summer. No more sleepless nights wandering around. No more waking up at 3-4 pm the next day to eat junk food and repeat the cycle of complacency. Pull yourself out of the hazy, dark hole because its time to be productive.
During the school year you pride yourself for being an open-minded, aware, knowledgeable, active and contributing member of society. Its time to test these values outside of your comfort zone in the academia bubble. This program and internship is a chance for you to venture out for a few months to explore your interests and test out how they translate into the professional setting. This program offers you so many great opportunities to work with local officials, talk with community members and strengthen your critical thinking, data analysis and outreach skills. You need to take advantage of these resources, give them 100% of your effort and be proactive. Don’t just wait to be told to do something, go ahead and do it.
And don’t forget to take advantage of your new living situation. You finally get your chance to live in an urban setting and get a firsthand view of urban delights and crises. Use your past experiences in Detroit and networks to spread your knowledge of the city to others! Get to know the projects that other people are working on in the area and try to get involved in your free time. Soak in the urban setting and make every effort to go to as many local community events and gatherings as possible.
